CHIROPRACTIC
FOR NEWBORNS

Why do babies need to see a chiropractor?

Chiropractic is the science, art and philosophy of optimal health and wellness. It was said by BJ Palmer that “Medicine is the study of disease and what causes a man to die. Chiropractic is the study of health and what causes a man to live.”

Chiropractic recognizes that the human body has the innate ability to heal itself. In order for the body to recognize challenges and to properly self heal, the brain and nervous system must be able to properly perceive what is going on in the body. When areas of the spine become misaligned and stuck, the brain is unable to properly sense what is going on and therefore can not send the proper messages back out to the body. This breakdown in communication interferes with the bodies natural self healing capabilities and is perceived as stress that activates our sympathetic (fight or flight) response of our nervous system. Constant activation of this system puts our bodies in a state of protection and survival instead of the normal default of growth, development, and healing.

Chiropractors identify the areas of the spine that are misaligned and stuck that are causing interference in the bodies ability to self heal and function properly . Once these areas are identified, they can be gently corrected through specific chiropractic adjustments. Once these areas of the spine are corrected the body is no longer in a state of survival and protection and it is able to put its resources into normal growth, healing and development.

Chiropractic for Newborns

Trauma during the birth process is way more common than most people think. Often, it goes undetected.

Let's face it. Being born is not easy. Even in the most uncomplicated births, there is a lot of pulling and pushing on a baby's head and neck. Add in forceps, vacuums, and c-sections, and now the stress put on your baby's body has multiplied.

According to Dr. Guttman, M.D., when looking at over 1,000 infants shortly after birth, over 80% of them sustained trauma to their cervical spine. He also found associated symptoms, ranging from movement and developmental impairment to lowered resistance to infections, especially to ear, nose and throat infections. (Source: Blocked Atlantal Nerve Syndrome in Babies and Infants, Manuell Medizin 1987 25)

In chiropractic, we call this trauma "subluxation." Subluxation causes nerve irritation. Since our nervous system controls every function in the body, if we have interference/irritation to our nervous system, we will not be able to grow or develop to our full potential.

Is Chiropractic Safe for a Baby?

Yes, very! The amount of pressure we use when adjusting a baby is light. It's no more than you would use when checking the ripeness of a piece of fruit, for example.

Chiropractic adjustments for babies are very gentle and effective. In our office, we use gentle and specific adjustments with no twisting or rotation. Many parents notice improvements with a variety of symptoms, including:

  •   Colic
  •   Reflux
  •   Latching problems
  •   Immune issues
  •  Ear infections
  •   Digestive difficulties

"

When we remove interference from the nervous system, the body can self heal the way it was designed to and we can live to our true potential.
