CHIROPRACTIC
FOR PREGNANT MOMS

How seeing a prenatal chiropractor can help your pregnancy and delivery

Chiropractic is the science, art and philosophy of optimal health and wellness. It was said by BJ Palmer that “Medicine is the study of disease and what causes a man to die. Chiropractic is the study of health and what causes a man to live.”

Chiropractic recognizes that the human body has the innate ability to heal itself. In order for the body to recognize challenges and to properly self heal, the brain and nervous system must be able to properly perceive what is going on in the body. When areas of the spine become misaligned and stuck, the brain is unable to properly sense what is going on and therefore can not send the proper messages back out to the body. This breakdown in communication interferes with the bodies natural self healing capabilities and is perceived as stress that activates our sympathetic (fight or flight) response of our nervous system. Constant activation of this system puts our bodies in a state of protection and survival instead of the normal default of growth, development, and healing.

Chiropractors identify the areas of the spine that are misaligned and stuck that are causing interference in the bodies ability to self heal and function properly . Once these areas are identified, they can be gently corrected through specific chiropractic adjustments. Once these areas of the spine are corrected the body is no longer in a state of survival and protection and it is able to put its resources into normal growth, healing and development.

How a Prenatal Chiropractor Helps Pregnant Moms

One of the most important times to see a chiropractor is during pregnancy.

Seeing a prenatal chiropractor is important for both mom and baby. The changes in a woman's body during pregnancy put added stress on the spine and nerves. This is why things like sciatic pain are so common during pregnancy.

Maintaining chiropractic care during pregnancy will help the body adapt to its temporarily altered state. The result is a more comfortable pregnancy and shorter labor times.

Checking alignment of the pelvis is important for  two reasons :

  • It allows for the pelvis to be in the best possible orientation, resulting in a more comfortable delivery.
  • Proper alignment ensures the baby is in the best position for delivery. The baby also won't get cramped.

A Balanced Nervous System

Equally as important to the pelvis being in alignment is a nervous system that's operating in balance. The central nervous system operates from either one of two states:

  • Sympathetic: Fight or Flight
  • Parasympathetic: Rest State

Your sympathetic, fight or flight part of the nervous system is designed to help your body survive when under stress.

From an evolutionary standpoint, this system was life-saving if a tiger was chasing you because it would give your body the necessary stress hormones, adrenaline, and physiological response to fight or run from the tiger.

However, in today's high-stress environment, this system is constantly being engaged or activated from everyday physical, chem

ical and emotional stressors.

A few examples of these stressors are:

  • Bad posture
  • Being sedentary
  • Toxic chemicals in the environment
  • Additives to the food supply
  • Household products that are harmful
  • Demands of work, family, and life

The majority of your life (around 85% of the time) you should be operating in the parasympathetic system, which is the rest, digest and calm state. But, because we live in such a stressful and toxic environment most people tested are in a sympathetic dominant state.

Why Chiropractic Care?

One of the main benefits of chiropractic care is that if we detect that your body is operating in fight or flight, we can help to balance the system, helping to shift your body to a more parasympathetic state.

We test your system through the use of heart rate variability, and other technologies in our office

So, why is this important?

For the body to be in the best state of ease for labor and delivery, the body must be in rest and growth, not fight or flight. If the body is stuck in a state of protection and survival, it will delay the birthing process. In many cases when you hear of labor being induced, mom is probably stuck in fight or flight.

Through a gentle chiropractic adjustment, we give the body the tools it needs for an easier, uncomplicated delivery process. Shorter labor times and easier deliveries become more probable under chiropractic care.
